Principal's Report

Jim.jfif

Dear Parents and Friends of St John's,

Last Sunday, Fr Gerado Tubis celebrated his final Mass as Parish Priest at All Saints Church. It was a moving occasion for him, especially when the Filipino choir performed a song in acknowledgment of his service to the community. As part of a transitional process, Fr Gerado accompanied Fr Tom Duncan on his first visit to St John’s School last Thursday to meet students and staff. It was a lovely way for Fr Gerado to pass the baton to Fr Tom as he becomes the spiritual leader for our Parish Community.

On Friday 20th August, St John’s School held Grandparents Day. This was the first time since 2019 that Grandparents had been able to attend this school event. Well over 230 Grandparents took the opportunity to experience the St John’s Community with their grandchildren by attending a liturgy, followed by classroom activities and morning tea. A big thank you goes to our organising staff, Mrs Irwin, Miss Brutnell and Miss Twidale.

On Saturday 21st August, the St John’s Parents and Friends Association held a highly successful Race Day at Bassett Park. Tickets for the luncheon were sold out prior to the day which ensured a very healthy fund-raising event along with the social opportunities and Fashions on the Field. The St John’s Race Day is one of the major fund-raising events of the P&F. I take this opportunity to thank our many wonderful sponsors and the organising committee of Kylie Sabine, Jodie Duff, Michelle Neven and Leoni Whitfield. I also extend my gratitude to the St John’s students who assisted with the serving of food to the 230 parents and friends who attended the day.

The beginning of spring heralds a change in uniform for all students with a move from winter to summer uniforms. Essentially, this means boys wear shorts and in Years 7-12, male students may dispense with ties. Female students may cease wearing stockings. In terms of the sports uniform, tracksuit pants are not part of the summer uniform. The new additions to the girls' uniform (shorts and long pants) are expected to arrive in November and will be available for sale for 2022.

Congratulations to the St John’s Dance students who attended the recent eisteddfod in Charleville last weekend and achieved many fine results including Overall Dance Group Winner. I know Miss Stopps and Miss Bright who travelled with young ladies were very proud of how they performed and conducted themselves.

This week, St John’s School will proudly present a Senior Art Exhibition titled 'Identity'. This exhibition can be viewed in the 'Walk of Art' section at the Roma Community Arts Centre. Commencing on Friday 3rd September, the exhibition will run until 15th October and display the wonderful talents of our senior students and their teacher Mrs Sue Tiley.

The St John’s Moonlight Fair will be held on Friday 22nd October.  This is the largest of the P&F fundraising events and is always a wonderful community evening.  The P&F and school are seeking the assistance of parents with stalls.  If you can help for a period of time on the evening, please contact your P - 6 class teacher or House Pastoral Care teacher.

Finally, a reminder that Friday 3rd September is a Student Free Day.

God bless – Jim Brennan

Year Two

This term in HASS, Year Two students have been exploring maps and directions. We have been identifying the features that define places and recognising that places can be described at different scales. When learning about scales, we have looked at several world maps and discussed how the world can be divided into countries, states, towns and personal places. Students have had the opportunity to design and create their own dream playground at a personal scale. They used directions and geographical terms to label and justify their designs. They used data and tables to group features and interpret information about their playgrounds.

Legal Studies

Year Eleven Legal Studies students have been looking into subjects for Law Reform in Australia. Students became particularly passionate about the reform of Domestic Violence Laws in Queensland and discussed their ideas with students from the University of Queensland’s Pro Bono Centre. It is great to see young adults thinking critically about areas of concern within their community and considering the changes that could be made. These changes were further discussed by students with Constable Rhodes who described his role in such issues within the community.

Big Brekky

Students whoare part of the Christian Community Service Program, Big Brekky, have braved the winter and have shown up every Thursday this term at the Vincentian Village! This is our first year where St John's have had so many student volunteers that we have gone to a three-week roster. Some of the highlights of our mornings have included productive debates on when to cook the bacon, which approach to use when cooking eggs, the one flip or the cover method and  the deal breaker: BBQ sauce or tomato sauce,  Mr Dobrota’s lone choice of ketchup. Mr Wilkie, Mr Dobrota and Mrs Parker want to thank all the students, over 15 of them, who have volunteered their time over the last three terms. There is no greater gift than that of giving one’s time and energy to help others, without expecting anything in return.
