Our School

St John’s Catholic School is situated in Roma, approximately 470 km west of Brisbane, Queensland. It is a Catholic co-educational School of approximately 720 students from Kindergarten to Year 12.

St John’s was established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1881. It was through the great work of the Sisters of Mercy that St John’s is here today. Many years of hard work establishing the school in unforgiving conditions ensured the progress of their dream to educate children in the West. Many men and women who shared the vision of the sisters also pledged their support during these early days and much of the success of the school can be attributed to their contributions and hard work.

Since its foundation in 1881, St John’s School continues to realise the dream of the foundress, Catherine McAuley and her Sisters of Mercy. Hundreds of children have been educated under the guidance of the Sisters of Mercy and lay staff. These students have gone on to being successful in their chosen fields.

Today our school achieves a high standard of education aiming to provide a holistic education for the children in its care: spiritually, academically, socially, physically and culturally. St John’s sees itself as working with home and community towards guiding students through many stages – towards perceptive understanding, mature judgement, responsible self-direction and religious and moral autonomy – to prepare in their becoming fully participating Christians in society.

St John’s has provided education for many generations of families that live in and around the Maranoa District/Roma. To keep pace with modern requirements of teaching and growing numbers of pupils, additional classroom space has been added throughout the years and interiors have been refurbished, with future plans for more classrooms and refurbishment.
